Few experiences in karate are as memorable as training outdoors with the sound of the sea, fresh coastal air, and fellow karate-ka sharing the same challenge. At Kaizen No-Michi School of Shotokan Karate, our annual beach events have become highlights of the calendar, bringing together students, families and friends from across the UK to celebrate traditional karate and community spirit.

Kangeiko – Traditional Winter Karate Training

Every year during the first week of January, we welcome the New Year with Kangeiko (寒稽古), the traditional Japanese practice of winter training.

Before sunrise, dedicated karate-ka gather on Cleethorpes Beach, ready to embrace the freezing temperatures, icy winds and challenging conditions. Training on sand tests balance, endurance and determination in a way that no dojo can.

Kangeiko is not about proving how tough you are. It is about stepping outside your comfort zone, strengthening the mind as well as the body, and beginning the year with focus and commitment. This traditional form of training has long been valued in Japanese martial arts for developing resilience, discipline and spirit.

Our beach sessions include:

  • Traditional warm-ups and kihon.

  • Dynamic karate drills on the sand.

  • Kata practice against the backdrop of the North Sea.

  • Team challenges that encourage perseverance and determination.

  • A well-earned hot breakfast afterwards, where everyone enjoys stories, laughter and great company.

The greatest reward isn't simply completing the training—it's the camaraderie built between everyone who shares the experience. Students often describe Kangeiko as one of the most memorable events of their karate journey.

Karate Bears On The Beach – Family, Friends & Karate

Summer brings a completely different atmosphere with our popular Karate Bears On The Beach event.

Families travel from as far as Yorkshire and Bristol to join members of Kaizen No-Michi for a relaxed day on Cleethorpes Beach. Everyone is welcome to bring their favourite teddy bear, picnic blanket and sense of fun.

The day combines:

  • Family beach picnic.

  • Fun karate sessions for all ages.

  • Games and activities.

  • Time to catch up with karate friends from different clubs.

  • Plenty of laughs, photos and unforgettable memories.

This event perfectly reflects what Kaizen No-Michi is about—developing strong karate while creating lasting friendships and a welcoming community. Whether you're a beginner, an experienced black belt or simply supporting your child, everyone enjoys being part of this unique family day by the sea.

More Than Karate

While technical improvement is always important, these beach events remind us that karate is about much more than punches and kicks.

They build:

  • Confidence.

  • Mental resilience.

  • Team spirit.

  • Lifelong friendships.

  • Respect for traditional Japanese karate values.

From the icy challenge of Kangeiko to the sunshine and smiles of Karate Bears On The Beach, these annual events have become treasured traditions for the Kaizen No-Michi family.

If you're looking for Shotokan Karate in Grimsby or Cleethorpes, why not come along to one of our classes and discover why so many students return year after year for these unforgettable beach training experiences?
