Have You Ever Accidentally Bowed or Said “Osu” Outside Karate? 🥋😂

If you've trained in Karate for long enough, there comes a point when you realise something rather worrying...

Karate has followed you out of the dojo.

You're no longer wearing your gi.

You're not standing in line.

There's no Sensei shouting “Yoi!”

And yet...

You bow.

Or worse...

“Osu!”

The accidental bow

You've probably done it.

You're somewhere completely unrelated to Karate and someone gives you a polite nod.

Your Karate-trained brain immediately kicks in:

Nod received. Respect required. Bow!

And then you realise what you've just done.

“Why did I just bow to them?”

You try to act normal and carry on as if nothing happened.

But inside, you're wondering whether anyone noticed.

Andy Sensei has actually done it! 😂

Andy's own Karate autopilot once kicked in at a rather inappropriate — but hilarious — moment.

He was best man at a wedding.

Everything was going perfectly.

Until the moment came to hand the rings over to the vicar.

Andy passed the rings across.

The vicar gave him a polite little nod.

And years of Karate training apparently took over.

Andy bowed back.

Yes...

Andy Sensei bowed to the vicar.

Not a wedding bow.

Not just a tiny polite nod.

His Karate instincts had seen the nod and immediately responded:

Respect → bow.

The vicar, the bride and the groom gave a grin but thankfully, simply carried on with the ceremony.

The “Osu” problem

For Karate practitioners, “Osu” can become almost automatic.

Sensei gives an instruction:

“Osu!”

Your training partner asks if you're ready:

“Osu!”

Sensei explains something:

“Osu!”

Someone asks you to do something:

“Osu!”

Eventually, your brain decides that “Osu” is basically the universal answer to everything.

Until you're talking to someone who has absolutely no idea about Karate.

“Can you send me that email later?”

“Osu.”

Silence.

You suddenly realise:

That probably wasn't the expected response.

The handshake that nearly became a bow

Then there's the awkward meeting between Karate etiquette and normal social etiquette.

Someone holds out their hand.

You instinctively start to bow.

They start shaking your hand.

You're now halfway through a bow while simultaneously shaking their hand.

Congratulations. 🥋🤝😂

When someone says “Thank you”

This one is dangerous.

You've spent years being conditioned to respond politely.

Someone says:

“Thank you.”

Your brain:

OSU!

Your mouth:

“...You're welcome.”

Your brain:

Good recovery.

Family members notice

Your family have probably witnessed it too.

They've seen you bow when saying hello.

They've heard you say “Osu” in completely inappropriate situations.

They've watched you nod at someone and wondered why you're suddenly behaving like you're standing in the dojo.

Eventually, they stop questioning it.

They know.

Karate has taken over.

Why does it happen?

Because Karate isn't just something you do for a couple of hours each week.

The etiquette becomes part of your behaviour.

Years of bowing, showing respect, listening carefully, acknowledging instructions and being aware of the people around you can become second nature.

And sometimes...

Second nature doesn't know when to switch off. 😂
